It is sunset - 'Yuuyake' and the tranquil forest displays a deep crimson red colour (Kurenai). This is the special time when the deep red light seeps trough the dark green of the trees before night finally falls. The graduation of the yellow to dark green portrays the ever changing colour in the forest with the gradual fading of the day at sunset.
The Kurenai is an ebonite over-size 'King of Pens' with maki-e decoration by artist Wataru Kurotobi. Taking his inspiration from the forest sunset and using saya nuri urushi inspired techniques the artist has produced this magnificent fusion of two Japanese traditions: maki-e and precision craftsmanship.
The Kurenai (deep crimson red colour) is limited to an edition of 33 pens.
Saya-Nuri was the name given to the free painting used to decorate the scabbards of Samurai
