  • Brilliant gold bursts from the page in this highly contrasting repeating pattern. Heavy gold tooling of interlinking curling shapes provides a diamond lattice within which more delicate tooling of varying shades depict thistle-like motifs. The vibrant binding held Voltaire’s Zadig, or The Book of Fate and was crafted in 1893 by Chamerot et Renouard in Paris. Voltaire was a writer and philosopher who over a prolific career wrote some 15 million words. The story of Zadig, an ancient Babylonian philosopher is an example of how Voltaire used allegory to portray his views on current affairs. His incredible contribution to literature and philosophy during the enlightenment era lead it to also be known as the Age of Voltaire.
